Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
